Gurur duyduğum her deneme, planladığımdan uzun sürdü.
Burada tutulmaya değer tek söz, yayınlanan her şeyin okurun on dakikasına değmesi.
Bedel
Hız, her yerde olma stratejisidir. Yavaşlık, belirli bir yerde olma stratejisi.
Ben belirli bir yerde olmayı tercih ederim.
Every essay I've been proud of took longer than I planned for it. Not marginally longer, embarrassingly longer. The piece you are reading was supposed to take an afternoon. It has now survived three weekends, two deletions of everything below the first paragraph, and one complete change of mind about what it is actually about.
For a long time I treated this as a productivity problem. I read the advice: outline first, set a timer, publish on a schedule, done is better than perfect. The advice is not wrong. It just optimizes for a different thing than the thing I wanted.
What the extra time buys
A first draft tells you what you think you think. The second draft, written a week later, tells you what you actually think. The distance between those two documents is where the essay lives. Everything I cut was written with confidence; everything I kept was written with doubt and then verified.
The distance between the first draft and the second is where the essay lives.
Slow writing is not slow typing. Most of the time is spent away from the keyboard: walking, reading something unrelated, letting the argument settle into its actual shape. The typing part is fast. The becoming-certain part is not.
A small working method
I don't have a system, but I have accumulated a few rules that have survived contact with reality:
Write the first draft in one sitting, however bad it is.
Wait at least three days before rereading it.
Delete the first paragraph of the second draft. It was throat-clearing.
Read the piece aloud once. Anywhere you stumble, the reader will too.
Publish when the edits start making it worse, not when it's done.
None of this scales. That's the point. A personal site is not a content operation; there is no audience-development target to hit, no newsletter cadence to defend. The only promise worth keeping here is that anything published is worth the reader's ten minutes.
The trade
Writing slowly means publishing less. In a medium that rewards frequency, that looks like a disadvantage. But the essays that stayed with me, the ones I remember years later, the ones I send to friends, were almost all written slowly by people who were in no hurry. Speed is a strategy for being everywhere. Slowness is a strategy for being somewhere specific.
I'd rather be somewhere specific.
